STUDY OUTLINE

1.Introduction

Skin is the largest organ in the body, it protects us from infection and damage, as well as, synthesising vitamin D, which is needed for overall health and well-being.  Skin concerns such as acne, extreme dryness and hyperpigmentation can make people insecure and self-conscious.  This can be damaging both physically, as makeup is often used to mask this and can worsen certain concerns if it isn’t washed off properly and/or mentally as skin that certain concerns can lead to lack of confidence and a decline in mood.  Even if you are not suffering from any particular concerns, it is important to remember that skin is an organ and it should be treated with products to maintain good skin health and with integrity, just like any other body part.

Helping people achieve their skin goals in a healthy, realistic and safe way through performing treatments and formulating products is what I want to do as a lifelong career; I am taking a thorough and professional approach whilst conducting this study as I am starting how I aim to continue.

2.Aims

The Aim of this study is as follows;

  • To assess the efficacy of a tailored skincare routine and/or regular facials on the appearance of skin and skin concerns through qualitative and quantitative measures

3.Methods

3.1. Consultation/Analysis

3.1.1.Custom Skincare Routine Group

You will be sent a detailed consultation from where you will need to provide elements of your medical history, your current skincare routine and details about your lifestyle.  You will also be asked to provide images of your skin without makeup and/or products (creams, serums, etc.) and a description of what you would like to improve about your skin and achieve from this study.  All of this information will be used to design a custom skincare routine, complete with descriptions of how to use the products, why you are using them and sources to support my choice of products.

3.1.2.Facials Only Group

Similarly, to the custom skincare routine group, you will be asked to complete a detailed consultation from where you will need to provide elements of your medical history, your current skincare routine and details about your lifestyle.  This is to ensure that the techniques and products used in the facials are compatible with your current routine.  However, if there is anything that you are using that I think is negatively impacting your skin health, I will advise you to stop and provide an appropriate replacement.

I will perform a full skincare analysis using a magnifying LED lamp, looking and feeling your skin, recording my findings on a facial chart.  I will be taking pictures using my DSLR to track your progress and will also be taking images of your face under a UV light to highlight things invisible under normal light.  I will also be taking readings using machine that measures hydration; it functions by conducting very small electrical current through your skin, which is not painful.  This analysis will be repeated at the beginning of each facial.

3.1.3.Custom Skincare Routine and Facials Group

The consultation method will combine the main elements used in 3.1.1. and 3.1.2.

3.2.Custom Skincare Routines

From the information given in the consultation, your custom routine will be created and clear instructions of how, when and why you are using each product will be provided.  The majority of products will be reasonability priced and available to purchase with ease, but alternatives at different price points will be given for some items.  Any skin medication or products you are keen to continue using will be incorporated into the routine.  Products that you are already using that are suitable will remain in your routine.

3.3.Facials

Everyone will receive a barrier replenishing facial that I have designed which features ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, panthenol, ceramides, natural moisturising factors and colloidal oatmeal replenish and support the skins acid mantle and natural protective barrier.

The facial will have the following components:

  • Double cleansing: oil cleanse and cream cleanse

  • Exfoliation

  • Steaming

  • Manual Extractions

  • Toning

  • Face Mask

  • Serum massage

  • Eye area massage

  • Facial massage

Slight tweaks will be made to cater to your skin type (oily, dry and combination)

4.Timeframe

The study will commence on Monday 28th October 2019 (subject to change) and will finish on Monday 3rd February 2020.

5.Measurements: Custom Skincare Routine Group

5.1.Qualitative

You will be asked to send images of your skin every 2 weeks so I can track your progress.  You will also be asked you to write brief notes about your skin every 2 weeks detailing changes you have seen in the appearance of your skin, changes in the texture and how you are finding the products + routine.

6.Measurements: Facials Group

6.1.Qualitative

Both normal images and images under UV light will be taken at the beginning of every facial.I will also perform a full skincare analysis using a magnifying LED lamp, looking and feeling your skin and recording my findings on a facial chart at the beginning of each facial.

6.2.Quantitative

Your skin hydration levels will be measured at the beginning of each facial using a specialist machine. It functions by conducting very small electrical current through your skin, which is not painful.

7.Measurements: Custom Skincare Routine and Facials Group

A combination of the techniques listed in 4.1, 5.1 and 5.2 will be used.

8.Presentation of Results

The results will be written up in a scientific journal format and will be published on the Iséda’s Garden website once it launches.  Images will also be published on social media platforms including Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for promotional purposes.
